Beginners Tutorial 1: How to Centre Clay

Centring the clay is one of the more difficult concepts to grasp as a beginner. To master it will require practice and for you to use your body in an efficient manner and relaxed manner.

This tutorial will cover the basics of body and hand position to help you centre the clay.

Centring the clay is not easy! But with practice it will lay a strong foundation for your pottery journey.

Beginners Tutorial 2: Opening The Clay

Once your clay is centred we can begin to open the clay wall up.

This tutorial will cover opening the clay wall while keeping the clay centred and important features such as efficient left and right hand positioning and body positioning.

This tutorial will also cover some issues you may come across in our ceramic wheel throwing classes as a beginner when you practice opening the clay.

 

Beginners Tutorial 3: Raising or Pulling Up The Clay Wall

After the clay is centred and open we can begin to pulling up the clay wall!

This tutorial will cover hand positioning and finger positioning where your body weight should be.

Pulling up the clay wall will allow you to create cylinders which are the basis for numerous objects created on the wheel.

 

Intermediate Tutorial: How to Make a Ceramic Bowl

All the elements that beginners must master are brought together to create a large ceramic bowl on the throwing wheel.

Connie will discuss hand positioning and issues you may come across when trying to create a ceramic bowl on the pottery wheel!

Connie runs Melbourne pottery classes over six weeks throughout four terms during the year.

 

Intermediate Tutorial: How to Make a Ceramic Vase

Connie will fly through centring, opening and pulling up the clay wall and move into shaping the clay into a round vase.

This tutorial will cover the tools, moisture and hand positioning required to throw a vase on the pottery wheel. Though it is for more advanced students, potters of all levels will benefit from this tutorial.

 

Intermediate Tutorial: How to Make a Ceramic Plate

In this tutorial Connie will make a large plate on the pottery wheel.

She will cover the tools, moisture and hand positioning required to make a plate and will discuss issues that may arise when creating plates on the wheel.
