Sachiko’s Hand Building Course Term 1

Classes Begin On The Week Starting Monday 2nd of February 2026

Hand Building courses teach the fundamental sculpturing techniques for forming clay, coiling, slab building, pinching, hand forming, and joining. The functional and non-functional forms for domestic ware to sculptures, are created using these techniques. These classes are perfect for those that have struggled with wheel throwing but would still like to made beautiful things out of clay!

What’s involved:

In the first 4 sessions learn hand building techniques to form mugs, plates, bowls, vases, and other sculpturing. In the 5th session gain decorative and final touch techniques, and glazing is completed in week 6. Course and materials fee is $495 and ceramic pieces are ready for pick up 2 weeks after the last class.

*Note: Firing costs are seperate - $10 per kilogram for non-glazed items and $12 per kilogram for glazed items.

About the teacher:

Sachiko Mardon has a Bachelor of Industrial Design (RMIT) and Master of Fine Arts (Ceramics - UTAS), apart from running a studio at Jack’s Magazine, she also teaches at the Incinerator Gallery.

Students are required to bring:
1.    An apron and a bath towel
2.   Dress in appropriate clothing (clay is messy) and warm clothes in winter
3.   Wear closed-toe shoes
